Al came in 2004 to Detroit to serve the Presbytery of Detroit as the Executive Presbyter, a role similar to bishop in other denominations. He has been ordained as a Presbyterian minister since 1974. As Executive Presbyter he is pastor to pastors and supports the mission of 80 Presbyterian Churches in Southeast Michigan.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in YMCA Administration from Springfield College (MA), a Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School, a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Moravian Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Urban Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary. He currently studies with the Rev. Dr. Gil Rendle, with a particular interest of how churches can serve their communities and extend the kingdom of God.
Al is married to Dr. Janna C. Roop, who retired in May as Assistant Professor of Nursing, Wayne State University. Janna and Al have four grown children. They live from Nevada to Boston.
In his spare time Al enjoys sailing. He teaches sailing in the Flying Scots Adult Instructional Program at the Detroit Yacht Club. He has sailed three Mackinac races. Al also serves on the Advisory Board of ProLiteracy Detroit, an agency that promotes adult literacy, with whom he served as a tutor for adults, and is President of the Detroit Rotary Club.
