About the speaker

GEORGE STERN WAS BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY.

HE RECEIVED A CIVIL ENGINEERING DEGREE FROM COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING WHERE HE WAS STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT AND FORTY YEARS LATER PRESIDENT OF THE VISITING COMMITTEE.   HE EARNED AN MBA FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

GEORGE SPENT 50 YEARS IN THE RAILROAD FIELD.  HE STARTED WITH THE BALTIMORE & OHIO RR IN TRACK CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE BEFORE MOVING INTO TRAIN OPERATIONS.  HE THEN JOINED THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL RR IN SALES AND MARKETING.   GEORGE CAME TO DETROIT AS VICE PRESIDENT-OPERATIONS OF THE DETROIT, TOLEDO & IRONTON RR AND THEN ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT OPERATIONS OF THE GRAND TRUNK RR WHEN IT ACQUIRED THE DT&I. 

IN 1989, GEORGE FORMED A GROUP TO PURCHASE THE CHICAGO & ILLINOIS MIDLAND RR, WHICH THEY SOLD SEVEN YEARS LATER.  HE THEN STARTED THE NEW YORK & ATLANTIC RR, A FREIGHT RAILROAD ON LONG ISLAND, NY.  IN 1999, HE WENT TO WORK FOR GENERAL MOTORS FOR THREE WEEKS AND STAYED FOR SEVEN YEARS.

GEORGE AND HIS WIFE FRAN MOVED TO BIRMINGHAM 40 YEARS AGO.  GEORGE HAS BEEN PRESIDENT OF THE BIRMINGHAM ROTARY CLUB, PRESIDENT OF THE SENIOR MEN’S CLUB OF BIRMINGHAM, CHAIR OF THE GREENWOOD CEMETERY ADVISORY BOARD AND IS CURRENTLY CHAIR ELECT OF JEWISH VOCATIONAL SERVICES.   HE HAS THREE CHILDREN, SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN AND ONE GREAT GRANDCHILD.  FOR SEVERAL YEARS HE HAS WORKED WITH SCORE, THE SENIOR CORE OF RETIRED EXECUTIVES AS A MENTOR AND ALSO TEACHES THE SEMINAR IN MARKETING.
