Detroit Free Press staff writer John Gallagher will be our speaker on Wednesday to discuss his new book which explores the greatness of Minoru Yamasaki, whose designs include important metro Detroit buildings and the Twin Towers in New York. The book is a biography and appreciation of the work of famed Detroit-based architect Minoru Yamasaki, who designed multiple important buildings in metro Detroit. Those buildings include the One Woodward skyscraper in downtown Detroit, Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township, and several buildings on the campus of Wayne State University including the McGregor Memorial Conference Center, which appears on the cover of the book in a photograph by the late Balthazar Korab. Yamasaki went on to earn worldwide fame for his World Trade Center twin towers in New York as well as notable buildings from Saudi Arabia to Japan. He was among the most important of the designers who made Michigan a center of Mid-Century Modernism from the late 1940s through the 1970s.
